Tips for Living Well at Home
Practical advice for older people and people living with disability
At Mid Murray Support Service (MMSS), our goal is to help you live safely, comfortably, and independently in your own home for as long as possible. Whether you’re an older person, living with disability, or supporting a loved one, there are simple strategies that can make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.
1. Create a Safe and Comfortable Environment
Declutter walkways: Keep hallways and living spaces clear to reduce trip hazards.
Good lighting matters: Add brighter globes or night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways to prevent falls.
Smart storage: Place frequently used items at an easy-to-reach height to avoid bending or stretching.
Safety checks: Regularly test smoke alarms, check power cords, and make sure your RCDs (safety switches in the fuse box) are working properly. These devices protect you by cutting the power if there’s a fault.
2. Manage Medications with Ease
Use an organiser: Weekly medication boxes, Webster packs, or tabtimers can help prevent missed doses.
Set reminders: Try phone alarms, a dawn clock, or a tabtimer to keep on track.
Ask for help: Many pharmacists can prepare medications in blister packs (like Webster packs) for extra support.
Keep an updated list: Instead of writing everything down, ask your medical centre for a printed copy of your current medications and dosages. This makes it easy to share with doctors, nurses, or carers.
3. Build Healthy Daily Routines
Stay active: Gentle stretching, short walks, or chair-based exercises help with mobility and mood. You can even join MMSS’s Bend & Stretch sessions for a fun, guided workout.
Balanced meals: Aim for fruit, vegetables, protein, and plenty of water. Preparing meals ahead can make busy days easier.
Rest well: Create a calming bedtime routine, like reading or listening to soft music, to support better sleep.
Stay connected: Phone a friend, join a community activity, or come along to The HUB for social engagement.
4. Prepare for Seasonal Changes
In warmer months: Stay hydrated, use fans or air conditioning, and avoid going out in the hottest part of the day.
In cooler months: Layer clothing, keep blankets handy, and make sure heaters are serviced before winter.
Storm readiness: Have a small emergency kit ready—torch, batteries, water, and basic first aid supplies can make a big difference.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Reach Out
Living independently doesn’t mean doing everything alone. MMSS is here to support you—whether that’s through home care, transport, social programs, or simply lending a hand when you need it.
