Practical Tips for a Calm and Connected Christmas
As the year begins to wind down, many of us start preparing for Christmas — a time often filled with family, friends, food, laughter… and sometimes a little bit of stress. Between gift planning, travel, events, and the general busyness of the season, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.
At Mid Murray Support Service, we believe Christmas should feel joyful and manageable — not rushed or exhausting. So we’ve gathered some gentle, practical tips to help you enjoy the lead-up to Christmas with more ease, comfort, and connection.
Keep Things Simple
You don’t need to do everything — and you definitely don’t need to do it all at once.
Choose one task per day (or even every couple of days)
Break larger jobs into smaller steps
Let go of traditions that no longer feel right
Remember — it doesn’t have to be perfect to be special
Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the quiet, calm ones we didn’t plan.
Plan Ahead (Just a Little!)
A small amount of planning goes a long way:
Write out a list before going to the shops
Shop early or shop locally to avoid the crowds
Consider doing a family Kris Kringle to simplify gifting
If hosting, share the load — everyone can bring a plate
Christmas is meant to be shared — including the preparation.
Be Mindful of Your Budget
This time of year can place extra strain on finances. Thoughtful doesn’t mean expensive.
Consider:
Homemade gifts like chutney, biscuits, or crafts
A handwritten note or memory shared in a card
Gifting time together — a coffee date, picnic, or drive to see the lights
Supporting our wonderful local shops and small businesses
A gift from the heart is priceless.
Look After Your Health
Hot weather, busy days and extra social gatherings can be tiring.
Drink plenty of water
Rest when you need to
Enjoy gentle movement like stretching, gardening, or short walks
Step away from noise or crowds if it becomes overwhelming
Your wellbeing matters.
Stay Connected
For some, Christmas can feel lonely or emotionally heavy.
Please remember:
A friendly chat can make a world of difference
You are always welcome at MMSS programs and activities
Reach out to us if you need social support or would like company
You are part of a community — and we care.
Be Scam Aware
Sadly, scams increase at this time of year. Be cautious of:
Text messages about fake parcel deliveries
Phone calls asking for bank details
Emails asking you to click links or confirm passwords
If something doesn’t feel right — pause and ask a trusted person for help.
