Winter Wellness: Practical Tips to Stay Safe, Warm and Well This Season
As the chilly months settle in across the Mid Murray region, it’s important to stay warm, stay connected, and take a few extra precautions to support your health and wellbeing. Winter can be a beautiful time of year, but it can also present some challenges, particularly for older people and those with health conditions.
Here at Mid Murray Support Service, we’re committed to helping our clients and community live safely and comfortably through every season. So, we’ve put together a few practical Winter tips to help you make the most of the colder months.
1. Keep Warm Without the Bill Shock
Layer up! Wear multiple layers instead of one thick jumper. Thermals, socks, and scarves go a long way.
Close doors to unused rooms to keep the heat where you need it most.
Use draught stoppers to block gaps under doors or windows.
Make the most of the sun—open curtains during the day to let in warmth, and close them before sunset to trap it in.
2. Eat Warm, Nourishing Foods
Hot meals and drinks help warm you from the inside out.
Try soups, slow-cooked stews, and porridge for breakfast.
Stock up your pantry and freezer so you’re prepared on rainy days when getting out may be tricky.
Hydration is still important—even in Winter. Keep sipping water throughout the day.
3. Take Care When Bathing
Cold bathrooms can be a hazard. Use a small heater before and after showers if needed (just remember safety first).
Have a towel and clothes within arm’s reach to avoid a chill.
Install non-slip mats and grab rails for extra safety.
If you need help, speak to our team—your dignity and safety are our priority.
4. Keep Your Home Safe and Dry
Watch for slippery surfaces near entries and verandahs—wet leaves and morning frost can be risky.
Ensure outdoor lights are working well for those shorter daylight hours.
Use a torch if you’re moving around at night indoors—especially to the toilet.
Test your smoke alarms and heaters regularly.
5. Stay Social and Connected
It’s easy to feel isolated in Winter, so make time for social activities where possible.
Come along to one of our friendly HUB lunches, join a craft group or hop on board our monthly bus trips.
Even a phone call with a friend or family member can make a big difference to your day.
Not sure what’s happening near you? Give us a call—we’d love to see you at one of our upcoming events!
6. Look After Your Health
Book in your flu shot and stay up to date with other vaccinations.
Don’t wait for illness to strike—if you’re feeling run-down, see your GP early.
If you’re on medication, make sure you have enough and take it as prescribed.
Speak to our team if you need help getting to medical appointments—we’re here to support you.
At Mid Murray Support Service, we understand that Winter can be tough, but you don’t have to face it alone. Whether you need a hand around the home, someone to chat with, or advice on staying safe and well—we’re only a phone call away.
