Farewell to Scrooges Op Shop
After many years of service to the community, Scrooges Op Shop, operated by Mid Murray Support Service Inc (MMSS), will soon be closing its doors. Scrooges has been more than just a secondhand store. It has been a place where volunteers gave their time, the community connected, and funds were reinvested back into local programs.
Over the years, Scrooges has helped MMSS support vital services across Mannum and the wider Mid Murray region. It has also been a valued entry point for many new volunteers who have since gone on to help our organisation in other areas.
Why the change
MMSS has grown significantly over the past two years, particularly in aged care and disability services. Demand for this support continues to rise.
To meet this growing need, MMSS is focusing its resources where they are needed most. Closing Scrooges will allow us to dedicate more time, staff, and funding to the delivery of aged care and disability services across our community.
A new chapter for the main street
While MMSS is stepping back, the well-loved site will not sit idle. The Mannum Progress Association, with the support of the newly formed Mannum Creative Communities subcommittee, will take over the space and open a Community Retail Arts, Crafts and Gallery Hub.
The Progress Association has already welcomed more than 20 new members into the Mannum Creative Communities group, bringing fresh energy and ideas. This group of volunteers and artists will operate the location, coordinate displays and exhibitions, and create a welcoming place where both locals and visitors can enjoy and purchase the work of regional creatives.
Looking ahead
As we farewell Scrooges, MMSS acknowledges the incredible contribution of volunteers, staff, and community members who supported the op shop over the years. Their efforts have helped us strengthen services and community connections that continue today.
We also celebrate the opportunity for Mannum Progress Association and Mannum Creative Communities to step forward and shape the next chapter for this important main street site. Their passion and commitment will keep the space vibrant, ensuring it continues to serve the community in fresh and creative ways.
