Staying Safe, Supported and Connected This Holiday Season
December is a special time in the Mid Murray region. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and many of us are making plans with family and friends.
But for older people and their carers, the festive season can also bring extra stress – from heat and travel, to changes in routine, or feeling a little more isolated than usual.
At Mid Murray Support Service (MMSS), we want you to know: you’re not alone. Our team is here to help you stay safe, supported and connected right through Christmas, New Year and into the year ahead.
Office Closing Dates & Service Continuity
As we head into the holiday period, please note that:
The MMSS office will close at 12:00pm on Friday 19 December 2025
The office will reopen on Monday 5 January 2026
While the office will be closed during this period, essential in-home support services will continue as per individual care plans.
To help everything run smoothly, let us know before the closure if you’ll be away or need to adjust services.
If you’re unsure about what services you or your loved one will receive over the Christmas period, our team is more than happy to talk you through it before the break.
Summer Safety: Looking After Your Health in the Heat
South Australian summers can be beautiful, but they can also be brutally hot. Older people are more vulnerable to heat stress, so a few simple habits can make a big difference.
Tips for staying safe this summer:
Drink water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty
Keep indoor spaces cool using fans or air conditioning
Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day
Wear light, loose clothing
Watch for signs of heat stress, such as dizziness, headache or confusion
If you or someone you care for seems unwell due to the heat, seek medical help promptly.
Staying Connected When Things Feel Busy (or a Little Lonely)
The festive season can be joyful, but it can also highlight moments of loneliness or change. Connection doesn’t need to be big or complicated; often, it’s the small gestures that make the biggest impact.
Try:
Joining in local activities
Calling a friend or neighbour
Sending a Christmas card
Offering a cuppa to someone who may be spending the holidays alone
A Reminder for Carers: Your Wellbeing Matters Too
Carers often carry additional pressure at this time of year — school holidays, visitors, extra appointments, and the general rush of the season.
If you’re a carer, please remember:
Take small breaks where possible
Say yes when help is offered
Share how you’re feeling with someone you trust
Reach out about respite options if you’re feeling overwhelmed
Your well-being matters, and we’re here to support you.
Looking Back on 2025 – and Ahead to 2026
As the year comes to a close, we’d like to thank our care recipients, families, volunteers, staff and community partners for another year of trust, collaboration and community spirit.
In 2026, our goal is to ensure that your services remain clear, consistent and centred around your individual needs.
We’re Here if You Need Us
However you’re spending this festive season — quietly at home, surrounded by family, or somewhere in between — MMSS is here to help you feel safe, supported and connected.
If you have questions about services over the holidays, summer safety, or support options:
Call the office before 12 pm on 19 December

From all of us at Mid Murray Support Service, thank you for being part of our community.
